Kimono Bustle Skirt

August 21, 2008

I have a large collection of kimono (at least one hundred) and love them all dearly. Unfortunately, even though I know how to properly wear one I know I will never be able to wear them all.

When I saw this post showcasing this link I was inspired.

The result is that I have been using my vintage kimonos to make Victorian styled dresses, skirts, blouses, and overskirts. My first project was a walking skirt (which I will post eventually). My third project is a blouse (which is 90% complete).

My second project (in case you were wondering if I forgot how to count) can be seen in this post: a bustle skirt made from kimono.

All of the photos are behind the cut (see: Continue reading "Kimono Bustle Skirt" ยป below). Each photograph is a thumbnail. Click it for a pop-up window which contains a larger version.

You will probably notice that my face is blown out or in shadows in almost every photograph. This was done on purpose because not only do I not photograph well, but I thought it best to focus on the skirt and it's movement.

Skeleton Site Launched

August 19, 2008

Good news and bad news.

The good news is that every single page of this web site is up and working. I have put up an introduction to the word courtesan, what steampunk is to me, and ideas for building a basic steampunk courtesan wardrobe.

The bad news is that most of the pages just say "coming soon".

Good news and bad news.

The good news is that I have a target date of December (2008) to have all of the content (except for the tutorials as they will go up as I create them) up and ready to go.

The bad news is that you have to wait until December before every page has its proper content.

Good news and bad news.

The good news is that I will be making every effort to post once a week on this blog with something new, exciting and steampunk or steampunk courtesan related.

The bad news is. . . well, there is no bad news!

Welcome to Steampunk Courtesan!

August 18, 2008

This started out as a test post more than anything, but it occurred to me that I should fill it out a bit since I am able to.

Long ago, on the Brass Goggles forum, a question was asked (give or take a paraphrase) of the members: "How would you describe your 'steampunk look'?"

My immediate answer was: "Steampunk Courtesan."

From that moment on I have been cultivating this web site within my head: trying to create the ultimate resource for what I believe is the courtesan genre within steampunk.

In between the bites and bytes I have been creating my own steampunk courtesan wardrobe. Bustles, corsets, petticoats, dresses, shoes, accessories, and blouses: nothing has managed to escape the details that bring it into what I call the steampunk courtesan style.

Unfortunately, while the ideas are here and my wardrobe is increasing I simply do not have a fully functioning web site. Thus, you will find many links simply do not work. Never fear, though, as I am working diligently on every single page and hope to have the site launched in its entirety by December of 2008.

Until then, I will put up a page here and there, in addition to posting in this blog. Topics will include information on steampunk and courtesans along with plenty of inspiration, tutorials, and shopping guides for interested parties to add a little courtesan flair to their attire.

Whether you wear steampunk 24/7 or wear it only at cons, I hope that you will find this site to be helpful and inspiring.

Incorporating Courtesan Fashion

Steampunk Courtesan

Bustles, corsets, jewels, and acrobatics

If you are visiting this site then chances are that you know what steampunk is and you know what a courtesan is. But you are probably wondering if the two fit together, why one would want to make the two fit together, or how you can incorporate courtesan fashion into steampunk. This web site aims to be the source and inspiration for all things steampunk courtesan. If what you are searching for is not here, ask and I will attempt to research it!
